  • Obama quit smoking voluntarily, but he wants to force you to quit isn’t that just Bull?

Did you know that Obama’s Cigarette tax hike took effect after he signed it into law just 14 days after he took office? I am not a smoker but I believe that people shouldn’t have to be taxed in the luxuries that they enjoy. One of America’s founding Father’s Thomas Jefferson said I place economy among the first and most important virtues, and public debt as the greatest of dangers to be feared. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. If we run into such debts, we must be taxed in our meat and drink, in our necessities and in our comforts, in our labor and in our amusements. If we can prevent the government from wasting the labor of the people, under the pretense of caring for them, they will be happy. Do you think Obama should force you to quit smoking? Or tax you in the simple things you enjoy?

  • He can tax cigarettes and booze all he wants, but not my Starbuck’s coffee—that is where I draw the line.

I just read Genesis where Joseph taxed the people 20% of all their income (mostly agriculture, I guess).

I would be happy for only 20%. lol

I actually believe in a flat tax where everyone and every corporation pays–no exceptions including all non-profit ones, religious organizations, etc.–and no deductions. All p;ay–poor and rich the same %. I am guessing 5 to 7% would be enough, but I am no economist.

  • @ANVRSADDAY -

I think we all don’t mind tax until it comes on something we like, or want or need. we hardly eat in anymore because of eat in tax here.

  • It makes you wonder though, if they taxe smoking to make it harder to smoke: why do they tax labor?

  • Yes, there are the taxes which are heinous. But we taxpayers also foot the bill for his habit. And then his wife tells us how to eat.

  • @PrisonerxOfxLove -

Oh no! You did not just get me started on that. It is absolutely, positively, not Michelle Obama, The government or anyone but a Parent’s job to them what their kids should or should not eat. Or Adults for that matter. Like the Giant Pop Ban in New York. They need to leave my sugary sodas, my Jumbo Dr. Peppers and my Captain Crunch alone. Don’t touch my Crunch! :nono:

  • These idiots never look at long-term effects of taxes like that.  If more folks quit smoking, that’ll put tobacco farms out of business, thus more taxes lost on their revenues.  It’ll put their employees out of work, not only losing that taxable income, but loss of more money in their jobless benefits.

I don’t believe in sin taxes.

I’m with @ANVRSADDAY on the flat tax.  Every transaction is to be taxed.  When one company sells to another, sales tax.  When we buy something, sales tax.  In order to protect the lower-class, though, I believe raw food staples such as milk, flour, fruit, meat, and veggies should be tax-free (maybe only at the consumer level though, so companies like Purdue, Mott’s, etc would still pay their share of taxes)  This would also virtually eliminate the need for an IRS.  It would also force corporations to be more honest about their subsidiary companies, because it would be taxed unless they call it the same company.

The gov’t should never try to persuade us how to act.  WE should be persuading THEM!

  • @grim_truth -

I agree on a flat tax. Mitt Romney is for a flat tax.

  • @derekwilson24 - I absolutely detest that the government, Michelle Obama or whoever thinks they should dictate what we eat or drink.  While I do not drink those jumbo sodas, I definitely think  that we want to drink them we should be able to.  (yes, I do live in NY)

  • @oldfatgramma -

Wow! I feel sorry for you. What do you do buy two 12oz cans of soda instead of the big 64oz? That is just rediculous.

  • I will say this. Make it harder for one to smoke and they will stop and then health insurance will not be so high. Make it harder for one to drink and we will not pay so much in healthcare.
Takes them like it is no tomorrow.
I wish the tax on Cigs, and alcohol was 2.00 extra. Then they would quite.
Here every public place you can’t smoke in .
Also where I live you have to smoke 10 feet from any door or window. Bro. Doc

  • @BroDoc -

I used to smoke Doc, but I quit because I got convicted of it. They were only $3 or $4 a pack back then now I think they are like over $5.00 a pack or more! Isn’t that getting up there with the price of Gold Bullion? Just Kidding. lol If I did still smoke I would be broke.

  • @BroDoc - Quit not “quite” and thats bs. I haven’t quit smoking because they have yet to make a cessation worth a crap thanks to the FDA. Smoking is as addictive as heroine, so really smokers are being discriminated against.

  • There is one way that works to quite smoking and it does not cost a dime. And they will not preach religion at you either.
If you have a Seventh Day Adventist Church near you, the have a Smoking Program that they do with food, water etc.
    And it works.
I took a friend that use to smoke, 7 years ago, and in a weeks time was done smoking two packs a day.
There are my friend ways to quite, but one has to want to stop. Bro. Doc

  • if smokers don’t want to be taxed more to cover their cost to the public, then they should be denied any form of public health care when costs are passed on to non-smokers.

  • Since later on the smoker will need gov health care of some kind, I know this both my parents died of smoking RELATED issues,I think the tax should go specifically into smokers healthcare like a pension.

  • I absolutely respect and appreciate your point on each and every object.
