A lesson from the Rich Man
Lazarus and the Rich Man (A True Story)
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Luke 16:20-31 (This is not a parable)
First of all the very first thing to note is that Lazarus and the Rich man were both Jewish. That means that in their day they were both Christians. Before Jesus came everyone was Jewish. That means that they were under the covenant of the Old Testament and expected to do certain things according to the law of Moses. Basically the Rich Man didn’t do what he was supposed to and he went to Hell. Lazarus however went to heaven. Did you get the Rich man’s question to Father Abraham? Why do you think that he wanted someone from the dead to come back and warn his family? You see, he thought that he was justified because he was a descendant of Abraham, that he was o.k. and on his way to heaven. How does that apply to us today? Well, people still say that we are justified through someone, only now it is Jesus and because of that we are o.k. and on our way to heaven. What do you think?
The Sheep and the Goats
When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Matthew 25:31-46
Jesus is talking in future tense and he says that we will be judged based upon what we did and didn’t do.
So my question to you is can we just live a nice, cozy, comfortable life, not do what God wants us to and expect to go to heaven?
Maybe the Answer is in here: Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:13-23
I think that these scriptures are pretty blunt and to the point. How about you?

have you been reading shane claibornes “irresistible revolution”?
Nope, I’ve never heard of it.
oh.. i think you’d like it. it’s all about really helping the poor and how it’s so overlooked in america
hi, I’ve been reading your stuff and wondered if you might have some guy aroud who’s maybe more mature in the faith who could disciple you. There are some good materials out there, like Robert Coleman’s The Master Plan of Evangelism.
Hey Derek. I just wanted to stop by and say hi. I am not going to comment on your questions this time. I think you and I both agree that we don’t always agree!!
I hope you have a great day!
Derek, I already told you I’m not going to argue this with you any longer. So, I’m not going to. I like what HaigLaw said… and I agree with him. Be blessed, Derek!! Now let’s go forth and carry out the Great Commission!
This was a beautiful post I just wanted to share with you…

Thank God for Grace. Jesus said that the whole law was somed up in the 2 greatest commandments to Love God will all the heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself.(Matthew 22:36-40)
I believe it was a heart issue not that he did or did not do. As far as America is concerned I believe we should be more worried about motive than giving as many give but they give because of guilt or to build up themselves and so on. In other words we tend to give selfishly.
If we take away the whole question of Hell. “Eternal security” etc., is it possible to agree that if you are truly a Christian, you will hunger and thirst for righteousness and be filled? Is it possible to agree that IF you are really a Christian, you will bear good fruit by doing good deeds and works? Is it possible to agree that a Christian will repent quickly when he/she sins and will not walk in rebellion, sinning purposely in God’s face? Can we agree that if you “work iniquity” that you are probably not a Christian? It never says in the Scripture if you just pray a prayer, you can go to heaven. It says you will KNOW THEM by their fruit. If I were looking at your fruit today would I find love, joy and peace or would I find adultery (lust), hatred, strife and wrath? Would we see someone who is willing to take in a stranger, feed the orphan and care for the widow, or would we see someone who is not willing to move out of their comfort zone and instead, judges people by the measure of culture (“They will just use the money for drugs”etc)? I think we ALL need to take a hard look at ourselves and see if we are really trying to please God and represent him well, or are we just living our life, hoping a little prayer will get us to heaven?
Yes, I am being discipled by a godly man named Dan Steepe not to mention that Jesus is the Head of my life. You can find out more about my pastor on our churches website http://www.newbeginnings4u.org God bless. -Derek-
